CRU-Africa is a community-rooted conservation organisation working with the people of Kisoro to restore forests, strengthen local livelihoods and protect the ecosystems that sustain them. Our work is grounded in the belief that restoration only lasts when the community leading it understands the value of the land, feels ownership over it and benefits from its recovery.
A Centre of excellence in research uptake in Africa
A centre that transforms rural communities in research knowledge generation, capacity building, and community impact.
Our work began in response to the increasing loss of natural forests and the widening gap between people and their environment. Many communities around Uganda’s forests like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest depend on firewood, herbal medicine and forest products, yet the same forests they rely on are shrinking. Through training, restoration activities and continuous engagement, we help communities rebuild their relationship with the land while opening new pathways for income, dignity and stability.
So far, our work has contributed to growing thousands of trees, building local nurseries, strengthening community institutions, and supporting groups such as NCCDO, BBCDA and Batwa elders to actively participate in conservation. Each tree planted carries a story of determination, cultural identity and hope for future generations.
